Vascular (Dilated-blood-vessel ) headaches

The pain in this type of headache is usually caused by pressure on the nerves as the blood vessels swell. Migraine and hormonal headaches, such as those experienced premenstrually and during the menopause, could be in this group. Alcohol and lying flat, because they increase blood flow to the head, usually make the symptoms worse.

If the blood vessels are dilated the face can be flushed or puffy and the eyes bloodshot. If the blood vessels are contracted the face is usually pale.
