The ‘Pale ‘ phase

Initially, when the blood vessels are constricted, the following may help

  • Lie flat to increase circulation to head; raise feet on pillows.
  • Apply covered hot-water bottle to back of neck or hot lavender compress to forehead (five drops of essential oil of lavender - or any oil recommended by aromatherapist or book - in a bowl of hot water). Have two washcloths and change the cloth as soon as it cools.
  • Massage scalp around the base of the skull and the neck, and gently move the shoulders.
  • If well enough to stand, have a warm shower and hold the shower head close to the back of the neck.

The 'hot' phase

When the blood vessels dilate the tissues become engorged with blood and swell. Try:

  • Lying or sitting propped up with the head well supported to decrease circulation to head.
  • Apply ice pack to nape of neck and washcloths which have been in cold water (add ice from freezer), to forehead. . Keep the rest of the body cool. . Get someone to massage your feet or rest them on a covered hot water bottle.
  • Apply Tiger Balm (available from health stores or Asian stores) or Oil. of Olbas (widely available in pharmacists) to neck and forehead. Both of these have a cooling effect.
  • Have an ionizer as near your face as possible .
  • If you can get off the bed, have a cool ,shower or Epsom salts bath. This will help to remove excess water from the body. Large packs of Epsom salts are available from pharmacies. Use three cupfuls in warm water. Apply cool washcloth to head.
