The headache phase can last from four to 72 hours in adults and less in children. The pain may initially be unilateral but as it worsens it can spread to a deep throbbing pain all over the head, behind the eyes, in the ear and jaw, and the neck and shoulders. Generalized aches and pains can also be present, plus nausea, vomiting and prostration.
