Migraine Pain Relief

Migraine headache is prevalent in about eleven out of hundred people and tends to begin at the age of ten and forty six and occurs mostly in women as compared to men. The person can experience severe pain on one or both sides of the head in this type of disease. Earlier, it was believed that migraines were caused as a result of changes in blood vessels within the brain. But there are various causes and symptoms by which migraine headache is caused such as alcohol, allergic reactions, tension headaches, physical or emotional stress, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, weakness etc. So, treatment for migraine headache is very necessary for every person.

The people suffering from migraine headache are given conventional treatment such as symptomatic control, trigger avoidance and preventive drugs. After the diagnosis, the doctors recommend painkillers to stop this headache. In many cases, the pain becomes so intense that it lasts for several days and should be treated with the medical treatment. The painkillers reduce the pain for sometime but it is not the right cure for this disease.

Some patients suffering from this disease is given the over the counter medication. It includes aspirin, paracetamol and caffeine. These medications provide some relief to the patient for sometime but are not effective for some patients. Sometimes anti-nausea agents or benadryl provides relief to some people from the continuous pain caused due to migraine headache. Narcoticspain killers such as morphine, codeine and opiates provides relief to the patients but these pain killers cause some side effects such as analgesic overuse headache and rebound headaches and many more.

If the over the counter medications do not provide relief to the patients then doctors suggest the patients to take fiorinal or fioricet which is a combination of acetaminophen, butalbital and acetylsalicylic acid. If these medications are taken daily then the person becomes habitual to them and sometimes it can lead to rebound headaches. Sometimes injections are also given to the patients in case of vomiting. In case of severe pain, sometimes drugs are also given as these drugs can be used as an abortive and preventive therapy. Serotonin and sumatriptan are the therapies which are highly effective and reduce the pain within thirty to ninety minutes as seen in about 70-80 percent of patients suffering from migraine headache. Some other drugs are also given such as rizatriptan, almotriptan, eletriptan etc. So, by taking these pain relievers one can stop or get relief from migraine headache.
