Migraine is a chronic disease of mild to severe headache pain that is usually experienced on one side of the head. About 12 percent of the entire population is suffering from migraine pain and generally affects both young and adults. This disease is 3 times more in women as compared to men. It can be caused due to the citrus fruit, chocolate, beans, nuts, sour cream, alcoholic beverages etc and results into symptoms like fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, fever etc. So, it is very necessary to treat this disease as it can create problems for many people. There are various alternatives to medicine which helps the person to reduce the severity of attacks and the frequency. Thus medications play a vital role in preventing migraines. There are various medications available for treating migraine and they are:-

  • H2 blockers
  • Antibiotics
  • Vasodilators
  • Antihypertensives

The medications which are used from preventing migraines are treated with prophylactic treatment. This is recommended to the person when it occurs twice a month, pattern of migraine attacks are predictable etc. This treatment includes Atenolol, Propranolol, Beta-blockers, Timolol and Metoprolol. Out of these, beta-blockers provide about 60-80 percent relief in reducing the migraine headache. Other medications include calcium channel blockers such as Diltiazem, Verapamil, Nifedipine etc and tricyclic Antidepressants such as Doxepin, Amitriptyline, Nortriptyline etc.

Other medications are:-

Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs

  • Flurbiprofen
  • Ibuprofen
  • Naproxen
  • Meclofenamate

Acute treatment is done to prevent the migraine headache. There are two types of acute treatment which exist such as Symptomatic and abortive. Symptomatic treatment treats the symptoms of migraine and abortive treatment focuses on the prevention of migraine as it starts.

Abortive medication includes:-

  • 5-HT1 agonists like Propulside
  • Prozac
  • Paxil
  • Zofran
  • Desyrel
  • Ergot alkaloid agents

Symptomatic medication includes:-

  • Combination analgesics such as Excedrin Migraine
  • Simple analgesics like Tylenol and Aspirin
  • Antiemetics which are used to relieve nausea and vomiting
  • Isometheptene which contains agents such as Midrin
  • Sedatives
  • Serotonin agonists
  • Steroids
  • Opioid analgesics which are used for treating moderate to severe migraines in individual
  • Ergot which contains substances
  • Butalbital which contains agents

Migraine medications provide such medicines that treat the migraine headache at the time of the attack and medicines that help to prevent the migraine headache which occurred for the first time. Some medications include Triptans which provides better and long lasting effect and relieves the headache by bringing the blood vessels back to normal. Sometimes overthe counter medications can be taken to treat the headache but overuse of this medicine can lead to rebound headache. So, various medications can be taken to get rid of migraine headache on a regular basis.
