Migraine headache in children

Migraine is a headache condition that comes back again and again. These headaches are very painful and children who have them looks ill and pale. Relief is usually linked with sleep. Treatment consists of finding and avoiding trigger factors in the environment, giving immediate pain relief, and taking preventive drugs.

Magraineurs have various signs and symptoms. A child migraine has a severe headache located around the eyes, in front of the eyes, in front of the head. The children experiences vision changes during headache. A sick feeling or vomiting is common. Bright lights, loud noises and strong odors should be avoided as it makes the headache worse. The severe head pain is relieved by deep sleep. Recurring spells of dizziness is another form of migraine in children.

An inherited tendency is believed to make some people more likely to have a migraine after some minor trigger. The key to recognizing migraines is identification of a pattern of short but very painful headache episodes that are relieved by sleep and separated by symptom-free intervals. Migraine headaches which are considered harmless causes a lot of damage to a person’s quality of life and ability to take part in normal life activities.

Studies suggest that migraine headaches occur in 5-10 percent of school-aged children, a percentage that increases through adolescence and peaks at about 44 years of age. Many people experience spontaneous remission, meaning that the headaches go away on their own for no clear reason.

Migraine headache occur earlier in boys than in girls. As children grow older, headache intensity and duration increases, and migraines start to happen at more regular intervals.

Causes:

The exact cause of migraine is not known but they are thought to be due to a temporary deficiency of the brain chemical serotonin.

Treatment:

Sleep is the best treatment for a migraine. Sleep restores normal brain function, relieves pain, and resolves many associated migraine symptoms. Doctor-prescribed or recommended pain-relieving drugs should be given to the child migraineur . At the time of attack, parents should have the child lie down in a cool, dark, quiet room to help him or her fall asleep. Sleep is the most powerful and best antimigraine treatment. During a migrainous attack, a child can often be found resting in the fetal position with the affected side of the head down.
